The effect of the router arbitration policy on the scalability of ServerNet™ topologies

چکیده
In this paper we extend a previously introduced method for optimizing the arbitration policy employed by ServerNet routers and we evaluate the method's effect on scalability. The ServerNet System Area Network (SAN), developed by Tandem Computers Inc., is a wormhole-routed, packet-switched, point-to-point network, with special attention paid to reducing latency and to assuring reliability. The ServerNet SAN uses multiple high-speed, low-cost routers to rapidly switch data directly between data sources and destinations. The ServerNet router arbitration algorithm has the ability to assign different priorities to different links thus controlling the distribution of available bandwidth among channels. We propose an analytical method that allows us to determine the correct priorities for channels so as to achieve fair arbitration thus increasing throughput and scalability, minimizing latency, and eliminating tree saturation. In our study we use data generated by a simulation tool to validate the proposed analytical model for determining the weights of router ports and to evaluate the resulting performance improvements.

ServerNet Deadlock Avoidance and Fractahedral Topologies
This paper examines the problems of deadlock avoidance in multistage networks, and proposes a new class of scalable topologies for constructing large networks without introducing loops that could cause deadlocks. The new topologies, called “fractahedrons,” are deadlock-free and reduce the maximum link contention compared to other networks. The use of fractahedral topologies is illustrated by va...

Existing multicomputer network routers use simple arbitration techniques such as rst-come-rst-serve or round-robin which have signiicant limitations in supporting needs in emerging multicomputer architectures and applications. More exible network resource control at the router level not only provides many beneets such as fair services, uniform resource utilization, and exible topology support, ...

متن کاملAn investigation into Cluster-based topologies for 3D Networks-on- Chip
A candidate to acquire better performance and package density can be introduced as three-dimensional integrated circuits, which this is compared to traditional two-dimensional. More specifically, a significant performance is obtained for 3D architectures through integrating schemes of Networks-on-Chip and advantages of 3D ICs. Since through-silicon-via (TSV) enables efficient inter-layer commun...

Network service guarantees not only provide signiicant performance beneets to distributed computing systems (more balanced resource utilization, fast fault recovery, and fair network access), but they are also essential for many new applications requiring real-time communications with continuous data types (audio/video). Unfortunately, existing multicomputer network routers, which use simple ar...
